Organisations actively involved in the project

The following organisations are partners in this research.

Auckland Region

  • Auckland DHB (ADHB) & Counties Manukau DHB (CMDHB)
Together ADHB & CMDHB comprise 855,000 people (~21% of the total NZ population).34

  • ProCare Network Auckland (PNA), ProCare Network Manukau (PNM) and Total Healthcare Otara (THO) are the three largest providers of primary health services in ADHB and CMDHB.

PNA comprises 85 practices and 244 GPs and covers a population of 305,000 (~72% of the population of ADHB) including ~11,500 Māori and ~26,000 Pacific peoples.47

Together PNM and THO are the largest single provider for Māori and Pacific peoples in NZ. Collectively they comprise 73 practices and 225 GPs; and cover a population of 325,000 (~75% of the population of CMDHB) including ~54,000 Māori and ~85,000 Pacific peoples.48

Midlands Region

  • Lakes DHB has a population of 102,000 with a high proportion of Maori (32%) and a small but growing Pacific population (3,600).35 Approximately one third of the Lakes population lives in the Taupo region and two thirds live in the Rotorua region.35
Lakes has a higher proportion of rural communities and a larger proportion of people living in socio-economically deprived areas than the national average.36

The mortality rate from lung cancer is especially high in the Lakes DHB (33.3 per 100,000 compared with 25.9 nationally).35 The 5 year relative survival rate for people with lung cancer in Lakes DHB (2002-2006) is 6.2% compared with 12.2% for Counties Manukau DHB and 14.7% for Auckland DHB;37 and later presentation to healthcare services has been proposed as an explanation for this poorer survival.36
Its large Maori population, high proportion of rural communities and poor lung cancer survival outcomes make Lakes DHB ideal for comparison with the largely urban Auckland and Counties Manukau DHBs, which are reported to have better lung cancer survival outcomes.

  • Pinnacle Taupo and Rotorua Area Primary Healthcare Service provide primary care services in the Lakes region. Pinnacle Taupo has 5 practices and 23 GPs, and Rotorua Area Primary Healthcare Service has 15 practices and 60 GPs.
